The Authors & Composers of The Church Basement Ladies
GRETA GROSCH (Playwright)
Since 1989 Greta has worked as a freelance writer and performer across the country and has a wealth of experience in both commercial and business theater. An original cast member of Church Basement Ladies, Greta originated the role of Mavis and wrote the script for Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping, Away in the Basement: A Church Basement Ladies Christmas and The Church Basement Ladies in A Mighty Fortress Is Our Basement.
A graduate of Mankato State, she bought her first guitar in the 90s and began writing comic songs. This led to a season at Dudley Riggs Brave New Workshoip and a love of sketch comedy. She continues to write and perform original material with a variety of groups, and her company, Girl With Guitar, provides educational and entertaining programming ranging from training seminars to company parties for organizations across the country. (gretagrosch.com) Additionally, Greta is the head writer for the Medora Musical in Medora, North Dakota, is a voice over and commercial artist and is a founding member of the Looney Lutherans. (thelooneylutherans.com). She wishes to extend a huge thank you to Curt Wollan and to Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson for this opportunity, what a trip. Greta dedicates this show to her Norweigan sister-in-law. Lise, who was "Born to Farm."
DREW JANSEN (Composer, Lyricist)
A proud graduate of St. John's University in Collegeville (Class of '83), Arkansas native Jansen is in the midst of a multi-faceted career as a performer, writer and composer. In addition to penning the scores for Troupe America's How To Talk Minnesotan The Musical and Church Basement Ladies as well as the History Theatre's The Gangster Musical, he is also one of the busier voice-over actors in town. An accomplished pianist, he has had the honor of accompanying such legends as Celeste Holm and Carmel Quinn. On camera, Jansen enjoyed a two-season run as “Ernie,” the announcer on Comedy Central's Let's Bowl! He was a contributing writer for television's Mystery Science Theater 3000 and created the text for numerous greeting cards and syndicated comic strips.
JANET LETNES MARTIN (Co-author of Growing Up Lutheran)
Janet Letnes Martin grew up in Hillsboro, ND where the words Norwegian and Lutheran were synonymous. It was no surprise she graduated from Augsburg College, in Minneapolis, MN and married Neil Martin, a 100 percent Scandinavian- Lutheran man from Newfolden, MN.
Janet started writing books in 1983. She wrote three books, co- authored three books with Allen Todnem, and one with her sister, Ilene Lorenz, before she teamed up to write and perform with a college friend, Suzann Nelson. Janet and Suzann have written nine books relating to their Norwegian-Lutheran rural background. Their book "Growing Up Lutheran, What Does This Mean?"won the Minnesota Book Award for Humor, and is the inspiration for both Church Basement Ladies musical comedies. Janet and Suzann have performed as a comedy duo "Those Lutheran Ladies" from the state of Washington to Washington, DC as well as in the Medora Musical.
Recently Janet switched gears and teamed up with author/artist, David W. Cook II, to writea fabulous new humorous book " Lemonade for the Lawnboy: The Executives Wives' Cookbook Committee."
Janet lives in Hastings, MN and feels blessed that her family is all involved in their Scandinavian Lutheran heritage. She is co-owner of Scandinavian Marketplace and the online store scandinavianmarket.com with her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Steve Green, her daughter, Sarah, is a national representative for the Norwegian Fjord Flatware Company and her youngest daughter Katrina Benedict is the costumer of Church Basement Ladies 2: A Second Helping! and is grateful that her husband Andy knows how to make egg coffee. Her granddaughters, Sophia, Ariana and Myana Green and Nora Benedict are the love of her life. She dedicates her contribution to this play, to her late husband, Neil, whom she misses dearly.
SUZANN NELSON (Co Author of Growing Up Lutheran) could put “ditto” under Janet’s bio. Their books and performances as the humorous duo, “Those Lutheran Ladies”, draw upon life experiences growing up as hardworking, church attending, 100 percent Norwegian-Lutheran farm girls. This is the nucleus of the heartwarming Church Basement Ladies musicals. She attended Universities in Minnesota and Oslo, directed a Norwegian language camp and wrote curricula. Changing from jeans into three-piece suits, she dabbled in government, wrote public policy reports, and struggled to put on pantyhose. In time, humidity and hot flashes prompted her to team up with Janet for her next act. By then, Suzann, husband Ron, and daughters Senja and Siri, lived in Grand Rapids, MN. After widowhood set in, she started her online bookstore -www.ruralroutebookstore.com. She spent her days looking for misplaced things and laughing with her four grandkids, and her nights were spent pondering her mortgage. Suzann quite unexpectedly passed away on March 14, 2021, and her children have since found her misplaced things and are thankful her legacy lives on in the Church Basement Ladies performances. Her online bookstore remains active, and her grandkids are still laughing at their grandma’s antics.

The LIZZIE Cast:
Margaret (Maggie) Hendrickson (Lizzie Borden) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Hendrickson. Maggie passed on into the next life unexpectedly when she had an allergic reaction to her Algebra homework. Born October 18th, 1856, Maggie is survived by her loving husband of ten years, local musician Luke Hendrickson. Luke made Maggie very happy throughout their marriage, especially when he did dishes and laundry. She is also survived by her two beautiful daughters, Layla and Ruby Hendrickson of Rochester Mn. In Maggie's 36 years of life, she discovered the stage. She was seen in other productions such as "Catch Me If You Can" and "Rock of Ages" at the Rochester Civic Theatre, "Spitfire Grill", "Evita", and "Aida" at the Rochester Repertory Theatre. She also did some sketch comedy and improv there as well. Maggie was Audrey in "Little Shop Of Horrors" at the Wits End Theatre, and The Narrator in "Murder Ballad" at the State Theatre in Zumbrota. Maggie, a lover of all things pagan and macabre, fell in love with the rock aspect of the musical "Lizzie Borden". The story of Lizzie Borden always intrigued her - she was THRILLED and Honored to play her on the stage. Details of the funeral will be announced at a later time - but snacks WILL be required. Epitaph reads: “When life gives you lemons-murder them
Samantha Ryan (Emma Borden) was born September 13 and if you follow astrology she was exactly what you’d expect from a Virgo. While with the living Sam served as a founding member and board president and of That Theatre Company while also working with several theatre companies in Southeastern Minnesota. Past Mantorville Opera roles included Elmira in Nevermore and Suzy in Wait Until Dark. Sam passed suddenly by accidentally high-kicking herself in the face. She was always one for enthusiasm. She is survived by a loving husband/best friend/super good roommate Jake and three fur babies, Penelope, Reid and Trix. Epitaph reads: Thank you, Sarah for letting me climb ALL the things!
Denise Ruemping (Alice Russell) was born to Charles and Priscilla Ruemping in the year of the mighty Star Wars release in Rochester, MN. During her childhood years, she became to be known as “that crazy kid” and stunned the world with her unique ability to refuse to blend in . . . EVER! Later in life, she was a teacher, a mentor, an actress, a director, a designer, and a writer. She was well known in the Rochester area theatre community, where she was involved in many productions at the Mantorville Theatre Company, That Theatre Company, the Rochester Repertory Theatre, the Rochester Civic Theatre, and others. Most recently, she designed lights for and performed in Our Kid’s Birthday and Jeff on the Shelf with That Theatre Company; designed lights for Luther College’s production of Die Fledermaus; and directed Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at the Rochester Repertory Theatre. She also designed the lights for four shows in the Rochester Repertory’s 2021-2022 season. Unfortunately, Denise’s life was cut short by an encounter with an inconsiderate shopper at the grocery store who stopped their cart in the middle of the aisle instead of pulling it to the side to let others pass. The ensuing wave of rage triggered an aneurysm which gave Denise just enough time to scream out, “Move your f@%^ing cart!” before dropping dead on the floor. She is survived by two puppers, Isabella and Dax, and two kitties, Bullock and Lambert. They shall inherit everything. Epitaph Reads: Here lies Denise: “Really?!"
Michele Nyman (Bridget) Michele was born sometime in the 1800’s, though her birth date was never officially recorded. During her life on earth she spent time acting, directing and teaching in various theatre companies, and especially enjoyed working with youth. She was always grateful for the opportunity to work with amazing people. Her last gig before she passed was directing a futuristic musical called Mamma Mia. Sadly, Michele fell to her death in 1892 after she tripped on a spider while hiking on the edge of a bluff. She is survived by JoeyBurrito the dog, PeterBeans the cat and the teenager.
Epitaph reads: “I’m sorry…I fell down. AGAIN.”
Sarah Schaller (Artistic Director) was born November 22nd and left this earth as many expected~with much sarcasm and sass! After contemplating her past experiences of directing shows like Nevermore, Assassins, Murder Ballad and Little Shop of Horrors, some thought she favored those musicals a bit on the darker side. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, 3 children and 2 dogs of Rochester, MN. It is rumored that when you visit her gravesite, if you listen carefully, you can hear her whispering “one more time” over and over and over. Epitaph reads: “Are you (Fill in the blank) kidding me?!”
Sophi Quimby (Stage Manager), 19, died August 1892 in the Mantorville Opera House after the stress of Questions, Questions slowly killed her. Ms. Quimby was born July 21 in Rochester, Minnesota to Katie Quimby and Timothy Kauphusman. She was gaining her bachelor's degree in health sciences from the University of Minnesota Rochester and wished to go into an undecided field in healthcare. She graduated from Byron High School and moved to Rochester where she went to college and volunteered as a stage manager at Rochester Repertory Theatre in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. In her spare time she enjoyed theatre, school (yes, she actually did), and spending time with her friends and family. She is survived by her parents, grandparents, cousins, “adopted” children, and her many pets (2 cats, 2 hedgehogs, and a chinchilla). Epitaph reads: “Coffee because adulting is hard.”
Raquel “Rocky” Saige Nisbit (Keyboard)
Date of birth: October 17th, 1870. Date of death: April 9th, 1892.
Rocky survived by her husband, Christian Nisbit, her two hedgehogs, two cats, and two guinea pigs. She loved playing piano, bass, guitar, ukulele, drums, along with tuning pianos, and she even taught music to over 65 students throughout her life. Rocky passed away due to her
stubbornness by trying to move a piano all by herself. Her famous last words were, “I don’t need any help, I can do it myself!” before the piano fell on her. She died doing what she loved, being stubborn and dealing with pianos. RIP.
Danny Ziebell (Guitar)
July 15th-October 28th 1892
Danny passed away suddenly after being struck by a snapping guitar string as he was tuning. Danny was survived by his partner Lindsey of 2 years, his parents Dan and Merri Jo, along with many cousins, aunts and uncles who supported him in his many musical endeavors while on stage with his band Faux Pseudo or in theatre. Visitation will be held at St. Shredder’s Holy Diver Church on October 31st at 6 pm.
Casey Saunders (Bass)
Casey was brutally murdered by his girlfriend because he left the toilet seat up one too many times. Before his untimely death Casey was an instructor for the IBEW. He was also in numerous other shows both on stage and in the pit.

ROB RONNENBERG - Muscles Malone
Rob returns to the stage in his sixth appearance for the Mantorville Theatre Company. He will again portray a muscle man as he did in this season’s first melodrama. Again as the strong and silent type, he will be a man of even fewer words. When not performing, he lives in Byron with his wife (Jennifer) and their family.
BETH REGENER - Kimmie Kibbitzer
Beth is thrilled to be a part of Mantorville Theatre Company's 50th melodrama season, having previously been seen on this stage in melodramas Truth or Counterfeits and Song of the Canyon Kid. Other past theatre credits in southeast Minnesota include Miss Holmes and Strange Snow (Rochester Repertory Theatre); August: Osage County, The Importance of Being Earnest, and The Secret Comedy of Women: Girls Only (Rochester Civic Theatre); and Grounded (Absolute Theatre). MTC changed her life, literally, as she met her husband of 22 years on their stage. She has also directed at Byron High School and Kasson-Mantorvillle Middle School, and has costumed at the Rochester Repertory Theatre and assisted with costumes at KM as well. She loves working with students and does so as the head coach of the Byron High School Speech Team and as a substitute teacher in the Byron and KM districts. HARRY COLEMAN – Set Builder
Harry Coleman has been a Director’s Dream Interpreter for the Mantorville Theater Company for a couple years now. He’s been allowed to act on the Opera House stage a couple times but he’s really fond of the physical aspect of making the director’s dream come true. If he can enhance that dream with a sight gag or two he considers it a job well done - and this show has plenty of opportunity. He thanks Karl and Bob for all the mentorship and help making this stage possible, Jen for the trust in interpreting her dream though he’s still waiting for the request of another door. He also gives a special thanks to two of ‘His Kids’ from the Byron HS Drama crew, Ash Parkin and Gretchen Tucker.

About the Cast of Dual Identity or Betrayed by Her Secret Past
SAVANNAH POTTER - Felicity Longlife
Savannah lives in Mantorville, just down the street from the opera house. She is going into eighth grade at Kasson-Mantorville. This is her first show with the Mantorville Theater Company although she has enjoyed performing since fifth grade. And before that, she has been creating characters and stories with art. “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to be in this show!”
KARL HUPPLER – Algernon Wily-Smythe
Karl is happy to be back on Mantorville's stage. This is a role he performed some time ago, in more agile times, but it still seems fresh and fun. The cast has been great to work with (as has the set construction crew, in Karl's alternate "role") and it is always fun to perform with the able assistance of the Frarck women.
DANE HOLMES - James Trueblood
Dane is very excited to be in another melodrama this summer, now with 100% less calculus. Speaking of calculus, Dane has been in at least two shows, including this one. In terms of shows, Dane believes this is definitely one of them. His hobbies include committing addition and sometimes multiplication. He would like to thank his parents for raising him with just enough discipline to make him funny instead of square. One last thing, he hopes you enjoy the show: because if you don’t, the ghosts in the theater will not be happy and force the audience to pay property taxes.
DAN ZIEBELL – Ralph Greenthumb/Ghost of Wallace Diehard
Dan is returning to the stage for the fourth time in Mantorville, He lives in Kasson and has a law office there. He has been active in the community and has performed in two melodramas “One Last Train to Nowhere” or “The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men are Derailed at the Junction” in 2015 and in 2017 “The Ratcatcher’s Daughter” or “Death Valley Daze”. He also acted in the 2016 production of “No Sex Please We’re British”
VICTORIA REESE - Betty
Victoria is excited to join the rest of the cast and crew for her first appearance on the Mantorville stage. She lives in Kasson and is thankful that her parents did not make her walk all the way here. She is happy to perform for and with new faces, and to join her friend Savannah in a production outside of Kasson-Mantorville schools.
GAIL VUKOV – Alicia Diehard
Gail is most proud of her roles as daughter, wife, mother and friend...though the reviews are still out! She wonders why she was cast as an old woman, when she feels as young as the heroine.
ALICIA FRARCK - Pianist
Alicia first started playing piano for melodramas when she was 14 years old. She has also been a villianess, and heroine on the Mantorville stage. She's been involved in theatre across SEMN. Something’s Afoul in Windy City (and It Ain’t Just a Baseball) By Victoria Carlson
Oh, the travesty an errant ball can unravel when the hometown hero’s life is cut short by a foul ball. And when an evil opportunist takes advantage of the baseball tragedy, will the Whistlers lose their dignity as well as their dreams of a World Series title? Come cheer on your Windy City Whistlers for the love of the game and to mend the heart of a dame. Because if the villain prevails, will your absence be to blame??
Let’s not take that chance.Get your tickets in advance! PLAY BALL!!!

In her spare time Doreen cultivates heirloom weeds and is still attempting to organize Minnesota’s first Olympic Jello-Carving team.

NAN STRAUSS – Director
Nan has had the pleasure of many, many years with the Mantorville Theater Company as a comic character, often as a villainess (always a most delightful part), as a director and a playwright, but only once as a heroine! She doesn’t know too much about baseball so she trusted to Vicki’s writing and went by the motto “Direct it and they will come!”

When she's not onstage she works as a Medical Actor/Standardized Patient at Mayo, has her own business selling skincare, cosmetics, and her own knit/sewn/embroidered creations, and is Mama to two sweet boys. You may recognize her from Miss Holmes(Sherlock), Constellations (Marianne), Beauty and the Beast (Babette), Sabrina Fair (Sabrina), Murder at Cafe Noir (Sheila Wonderly). Since then he’s been mostly playing on the stage a few blocks from his home at Chatfield’s Center for the Arts, with Wits’ End Theatre. He’s also performed in a bunch of shows around Rochester and in Lanesboro. Randy loves singing, memorizing lines, practicing accents, playing drums and mugging for applause. As a day job, he writes software for counting everything from boards to bedsprings. Randy sends special thanks to Valerie Peterson Wilson, his wife and muse of 37 years, for all her support and encouragement. This will be the first time she’s seen him in a dress.

BRIAN BEDARD – Jack
This is Brian’s fifth time on stage in Mantorville. Previously, he was in "Love, Sex and the I.R.S." and has been in three summer melodramas. Her favorite is directing and choreographing - most memorable being Mary Poppins, Annie, and Evil Dead: The Musical. She just completed her Associates in Physical Therapy Assistant and works for Bob and Brad "The most famous physical therapists on the internet, in their opinion of course." She is thankful for her energetic son, her fiancé, and this wonderful cast.

When not living in the spotlight on stage Matthew enjoys reading, spending time with his son, and enjoying the outdoors.
KATHRYN HEROFF – Florence
Kathryn is happy to be performing once again on the historic Mantorville Stage after a hiatus of far too long! She says it’s great to have live theatre making a comeback, especially in this beloved venue! You may have seen Kathryn in Mantorville’s productions of Church Basement Ladies playing the whacky Mavis, or in MeshugaNuns as Mother Superior or Lucy Humde in How to Talk Minnesotan. She performed last fall in Zumbrota in Z-Theatre’s original musical Lutheran Ladies Luncheon: A Recipe to Rock, as well as enjoying roles in the past at the Rochester Civic Theater and The Rep Theatre of Rochester. After performing in the area for the past 34 years, some favorite roles include Golde in Fiddler on the Roof (twice), Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, and of course Mavis in the Church Basement Ladies! However, she’s always looking for her next favorite project and she thanks her long-suffering husband, Tim, for putting up with her rehearsal schedules and for helping her run lines!

You may recognize her from Miss Holmes(Sherlock), Constellations (Marianne), Beauty and the Beast (Babette), Sabrina Fair (Sabrina), Murder at Cafe Noir (Sheila Wonderly). About the Cast of Professor Pembroke's Predicament or A Curse Comes Home:
Brian Bedard (Mr. Flam Bhey)
This is Brian’s fourth time on stage in Mantorville. He just played a villain in the June melodrama, A Schreck in the Night or Yes! We Have Nosferatu. Previously he was in Love, Sex and the I.R.S. and The Dastardly Diamond of Destiny. He also worked backstage for the eerie musical Nevermore. He is very active in local community theater and has been a part of over 20 productions all around SE Minnesota. He is a Web Developer for the University of Minnesota. He is an aspiring voice actor and writer.
Christine M. Boos (Granny)
Christine, from Rochester, was last seen on the Mantorville Theatre Company stage as Diana Desdemona in Lend Me a Tenor. Other productions on this stage include Blythe Spirit, Weekend Comedy, and Steel Magnolias. Christine is also involved with other area theaters: Rochester Repertory Theatre, Absolute Theatre, Rochester Civic Theatre, Theater du Jour, and Vertigo Theatre Factory. When not acting, Christine is an IT Application Architect at Mayo Clinic, supporting Research and the Epic Electronic Health Record. This is Christine's first Melodrama and she is having a blast! Enjoy the show!
Karl Huppler (Professor Orvis Pembroke)
Karl has worked with the Mantorville Theatre Company since 1980 - on stage, off stage, on board, volunteer off board (but never bored). His last project was working with other volunteers to rebuild our stage while we were all biding our time waiting for the chance to present live theatre again. It is great to be back on stage with a great cast, crew, and interactive audience!
Tom Gall (Opec the Vulture)
The first melodrama Tom was in was Greg Miller’s (playright of this show) Lament of the Lupine Lover or What’s the Big Hairy Deal? in 1996 as Orvis Pembrook. This show is the first with his daughter Madeline which has made for a great Father/Daughter summer adventure.
Madeline Gall (King Ramma Lamma Ding Dong)
The first show Madeline was in was Bugsy Malone Jr., a middle school show, when they were in 5th grade. This is their second melodrama, and this show has given them by far the most interesting role they’ve ever had. It’s been quite interesting getting to see their father’s acting as well.
Dane Holmes (Kelvin Dobbs)
Dane is a sophomore at Iowa State University who’s ready to put on an epic show tonight. He’s only home for the summer so enjoy it (or not, I won’t judge) while you can. He’s been in too many shows in high school to bother listing but the notable ones include his role as Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast and Ichabod Crane in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. His hobbies include doing calculus like a nerd and chewing the same piece of gum for three hours. Now, with all that stuff that only his mother is going to read being said, Dane really hopes you enjoy the show.
Emma Wilson (Penny Pembroke)
Emma is a senior at Kasson-Mantorville high school. She previously appeared as Mrs. Fryer in Radium Girls, Charlotte Charlie in The Super Non-Heroes and Flora in Who Poisoned his Meatball? In her extra time she enjoys watching movies, drawing, decorating her room, and learning new languages!
Mary Wellner (Pianist)
Mary has been involved with the Mantorville theatre as a pianist off and on since 1982. With a degree in Piano Performance she has done many musical productions in Rochester and the surrounding area. She also has a piano studio, teaching pupils of all ages, and performs her jazz renditions at various venues in southeast Minnesota.
Cheryl Frarck (Director)
Cheryl has been involved with the Mantorville Theatre Company since 1977; Cheryl has written, acted, and directed at Mantorville, and she is delighted to bring Professor Pembroke's Predicament back to the stage with this talented cast.
